McDonalds and council team up for Chesterfield Canal clean up
As a founding sponsor of Keeping Britain Tidy’s ‘Love where you Live’ campaign, 40 McDonald’s volunteers took part in a litter-picking clear up of the historic Chesterfield site, from Chesterfield Basin all the way up to Staveley Basin.
Chesterfield-based graffiti removal company ‘GraffitiAway’ also pitched in to help clean the graffiti covering most of the Chesterfield bridges across the canal and Himalayan Balsalm Weeds growing along the canal were tackled by the Derbyshire County Council Countryside Service Team. Mike Harris from ‘GraffitiAway’, Rob Auton from Chesterfield Canal Trust and a Derbyshire County Council representative were also present.
The event was also a protest against the proposed closure of the Tapton Lock, with its canal festivals, Bluepool wildlife reserve and boat trips popular with the locals.
