One lane of the northbound M1 is closed between Junction 30 for Barlborough and 31 for Sheffield, with Highways England estimating that it will re-open at around 3.30pm.
Emergency services were alerted to the collision just before 7.30pm yesterday and found that a vehicle had left the road.
Two people died as a result of the crash but they have not yet been named.
The M1 was closed in both directions for a number of hours while crash scene investigation work was carried out.
Earlier today, South Yorkshire Police said: “At 7.29pm last night, police received reports that a vehicle had left the M1 northbound carriageway between J30 and 31 near Woodhall.
“On emergency services’ arrival at the scene, two people were sadly pronounced dead.
“One lane of the M1 remains closed at this time as officers continue their enquiries.”
