Chesterfield Magistrates’ Court was told on Tuesday, August 11, that Bradley McCarthy had been behind the wheel of the Mercedes vehicle at the scene of the collision in High Lane, Ridgeway, on February 14.
Prosecuting, Becky Allsop said that McCarthy, 27, of Badger Road, Woodhouse, Sheffield, said the driver received several injuries in the collision, including damage to her spine, and to her mouth when her dentures were forced back by the impact.

“The defendant told police that he didn’t have time to stop when he saw the line of traffic and instinctively steered the vehicle onto the other side of the road.”
Speaking in his own defence, McCarthy, who admitted driving without due care and attention, said that he had started work at 3am delivering fruit and vegetables - taking the job after being made redundant from his job as a groundworker.
Magistrates fined McCarthy £255 and ordered him to pay £85 costs and a £32 victim surcharge. They also put six penalty points on his driving licence.
