Mortimer Wilson School is celebrating achieving its best ever GCSE results this year.
The school, which will change its name to Alfreton Grange Arts College next month, saw its five plus A*-C grades improve by a staggering close-on 40 per cent from 38 per cent of Year 11 students to 53 per cent.
However with the Government's own favoured measure of 5+A*-C grades including English & Maths, the school saw a phenomenal 115 per cent improvement to a level of 43 per cent, significantly above the 30 per cent threshold targeted by the Government.
Headteacher Wendy Sharp said; "These results are a credit to our students who have been an especially wonderful group of young people, their families for supporting them and to all my Staff, both Teachers and support Staff who have given their all to help students achieve their potential. I am very proud of them all."
Mrs Sharp added: "Mortimer Wilson has made significant strides forward this year, gaining specialist status in the Arts, increasing standards at 'A' level by almost 30% and now achieving these outstanding results. We have reaped the results of strong team work from everyone and wise investments in personnel and resources. We shall remember the lessons learned and endeavour to continue good practice and forge ahead to even greater heights.
"I hope the community of Alfreton and the surrounding villages will share in our success and be rightly proud of their secondary school. We are now looking forwards to the future and our new identity with confidence and anticipate building more links with the Community as a result of our Specialist Arts Status."
