'Stunning' Derbyshire castle hotel on the market after sudden closure

The owners of Willersley Castle Hotel, in Cromford, announced last month they had ‘taken the difficult decision’ not to reopen the venue following lockdown.
Owners Methodist Guild Holidays Ltd said it had held ‘an essential review of the business during tough trading conditions’ before making the decision that the hotel will not reopen and is to be sold.

Hide AdThe company is undertaking a consultation period with the 33 hotel employees and all those affected by the closure and sale.
Managing director of Methodist Guild Holidays, Nicola Firth, said, “The Board and Management of Methodist Guild Holidays Ltd are saddened that the future of the hotel could not be rescued.
"We are thankful to our loyal employees and customers during the years we have owned and managed Willersley Castle Hotel.”
The company says there is no update currently on any potential sale.

All customers with bookings were expected to be contacted by the hotel manager to discuss a booking transfer or refund.
The Grade II* listed structure was built for the great industrialist, Sir Richard Arkwright, at the end of the 18th Century.
It overlooks the River Derwent and Matlock Bath on the edge of the Peak District National Park. It also forms part of the UNESCO Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site.

Hide AdThe historic building is set in 60 acres of private grounds, described as ‘stunning’, and has its own swimming pool. The site has a total of 43 bedrooms.
Commenting on Facebook, Derbyshire residents said they were saddened by the news of the closure and sale.
Davinia Dave Reynolds posted: “Absolutely gutted! We loved Willersley, it was our escape. So sad, I hope in the future you may find a way of reopening. Thank you all for your service.”
Jennie Strong said: “Oh a little bit of my heart has just broken.”
