PICTURES: The Brownies are 100 years old!
In 1910 the Girl Guides Association was formed - a separate organisation for girls after girls ‘gatecrashed’ the first Boy Scout Rally at Crystal Palace.
The Guides junior section for girls aged under 11 was initially called Rosebuds in 1914 - and renamed Brownies the following year.

Hide AdOlave Baden-Powell, Robert Baden-Powell’s wife, was appointed chief guide in 1918 and the Queen enrolled in 1937.
Today Girlguiding is the leading charity for girls and young women in the UK with 546,406 members and 100,000 volunteers.
