Dogs are truly marvelous and make terrific companions, as anybody who owns one will tell you.
They give us unconditional love, friendship, emotional support, and bring laughter in our lives even in the dullest of times.
Founded in 2004, National Dog Day honours all breeds and aims to raise public awareness about the number of dogs who need to be rescued.
To celebrate the occasion, we asked Derbyshire Times’ readers to share pictures of their beloved pooches and tell us why they are so special to them.
And we have been overwhelmed by the response with more than 100 dog owners getting in touch about their furry companion.
We've compiled just a selection of the pictures in our pawsome gallery below – and we think you’ll agree when we say they're all simply adorable!

Kathryn Atkin said: "Liesl a rescued young Dobermann is special because she came to us after we sadly had to have our second (elderly) Dobermann Jesse put to sleep in May.
"Most rescues were reluctant to rehome to us, because we have cats and their rescues were untested, but one, Lincs Dobermann Rescue, thankfully matched us to lovely Liesl." Photo: Submitted
