SONG king Eliot Kennedy has written, produced and recorded some of pop’s biggest hits for the likes of Take That, Bryan Adams, the Spice Girls and Aretha Franklin – but now he’s the star of the show.

My Destiny, his own debut single – 30 years in the waiting – is getting thousands of streams and radio plays, including prime slots on BBC Radio Two.

The Sheffield based Grammy Award winner might be used to hearing his songs played regularly on the airwaves, like Take That’s Everything Changes, Boyzone’s Picture Of You and When You’re Gone, the Bryan Adams and Mel C duet.

But the mastermind behind pop’s hit parade is thrilled to be making an impact with his own big soulful voice which has been compared to the likes of superstars Michael Bolton and Michael McDonald.

And he’s still finding time to record some of the biggest music names on the planet – Look But Don’t Touch, a new song for Dame Shirley Bassey, co-written by Eliot, Jim Jayawardena and David Corbell, also had its first run on Radio 2 this week.

Eliot, who has taken the spotlight with his superstar friends on stage to raise thousands of pounds for charity at venues like Sheffield City Hall, has never recorded an album of his own until now. It will be called A Yacht Named Sue and will set sail early 2021.

Of the first single from it, a funky, up-tempo pop track, he said: "My Destiny is my first EVER single release... after 30 years of writing hits for international artists... this is me!

"I am truly thankful for the kindness and support of everyone. Means the world to me. So happy with how 'My Destiny' sounds on radio.”

A high-energy pop track on the forthcoming album is Don’t Raise Me Up, about the pain and heartache of his divorce. “It was a difficult song to write and difficult to sing, but it’s why it works. It’s full of emotion.”

Lockdown, introspection and the encouragement of his famous friends led to the ‘deeply personal’ first album, an experience Eliot described as ‘cathartic’.

“Not only am I singing,” Eliot said, “but the album has a lot of my life in it.”

“It seemed the right time. I’m capable of doing different styles of music – that’s been the best thing about my career working with so many diverse artists – but this is more about expressing myself. There’s a lot of self-reflection going on, being locked down.”

In the past quarter century, Eliot has written some of pop’s biggest songs.
