Schools and churches mark the occasion by collecting produce and giving thanks for them at services.
These days the donated food is usually distributed by charities to the needy.
In years gone by schoolchildren would deliver boxes of vegetables, fruit and tinned foods to the elderly, infirm or those in need within the community where they lived.
